Hornet Fun Facts

Green HornetGreen Hornet

There are about 20 species of hornets.

Some reach almost 2 inches in length.

Hornets’ hives are made out of finely chewed tree bark.

Short Life

Male hornets do not live long; their only job is to mate with the queen and die shortly after. Males have the shortest life cycle.

Hornets only live for one season, except for a young queen with its fertilized eggs that is able to find a warm place for the winter.

Defense System

Pheromone is the hornet’s alarm that danger is lurking. It is the hornets’ way to get the entire nest to attack. Killing only one hornet close to its nest with others present can be dangerous.

Hornets have stingers and venom—human beings are not their target.

Hornets do not attack humans unless if they feel threatened.

Though hornets have larger stingers than bees, many hornets are less toxic than bees.
